Avoiding Plagiarism

What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is when you use someone else’s IDEAS or WORDS and present them as your own. Basically, it’s stealing.

You probably already know that you have to cite when you use a quotation. But, it might be news that you also have to give credit even when you use or are inspired by an  idea that came from someone else.

How to Avoid Plagiarizing

  1. Provide a citation each and every time you quote.
  2. Provide a citation each time you paraphrase, summarize, or use another person’s ideas in any way.
  3. Provide a bibliography/works cited each and every time you use someone else’s words or ideas.
